May 5, 2009 Rehearsal

I Feel a Song Comin’ On is an appropriate name for this year’s spring concert. It is a compilation of a variety of ballads from other countries as well as some oldies and other familiar tunes that Bruce & Linda have arranged beautifully. Then with magnificent composers like Rutter creating songs like “Pie Jesu” our repertoire is well rounded. We are privileged to have violin accompaniment on “There is Sunshine in My Soul Today” and "Ha Shalom" as well. And the stirring, “A Psalm of Life” with French horn accompaniment is a magnificent way to close the concert.

We hope you are inviting all your family and friends to our Spring Concert this Saturday May 9. We know they will enjoy it.

Performers need to be at the Caldwell High School Auditorium at 5:45 pm to begin final rehearsal before the concert at 7:30 pm. Binders should be cleaned out of any loose papers and free of anything you might have put on the front or sides; music is quietest if put into plastic covers. Please do not wear perfume as some may be allergic to it.

Also the refreshment committee asks that each of us bring a plate of cookies for the refreshment table for after the concert.

The order of the songs remains as follows (unless a change is directed):
1. “I Feel a Song Comin’ On”
2. “Home of My Heart”
3. “Ku-Ku”
4. “Loch Lomond”
5. “Ha Shalom”
6. “April Showers”
7. “Embraceable You”

8. “There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
9. “Abide With Me; ‘ Tis Eventide”
10. “Pie Jesu”
11. “A Psalm of Life”

April 21, 2008 Rehearsal

Our Spring semester of Una Voce's group vocal class is drawing to a close and now we are just putting on the finishing touches for the Spring Concert. It's especially good that many have memorized most of the first 7 numbers and can be more responsive to Linda's direction. It's going to be a great concert.

We were privileged to have Mark Givens, playing the french horn, practice with us on Pie Jesu. What a gifted and talented musician he is. He is Cherie Givens' son.

Linda is doing auditions for anyone wanting to participate in solos or ensembles during the Spring Concert. Please contact Linda as soon as possible.

The order of songs for the concert remains the same as listed in previous posts. We will be placed in standing order on the 28th, then on the 5th will be dress rehearsal. At the dress rehearsal it is not necessary to wear the blouse you will be wearing at the concert just bring it so they can get a picture of how all the colors will look.

March 17, 2009 Rehearsal

Hello once again this week. Time is flying by and it’s hard to believe that we are just 6 rehearsals away from our Spring Concert on May 9. We hope Milana’s accompaniment CD is a big help to you as you practice the music at home over the next 2 weeks.

Bruce handed out a REMINDER: No rehearsal next week, March 24th. SPRING BREAK! If you know someone who wasn’t here this week, please let them know.

Tonight we reviewed 6 of the first 7 songs of the program that we are to have memorized. “Ha Shalom” was the one missed. In addition we also practiced, “There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today” & “Abide With Me; ‘ Tis Eventide”. Then we did a quick run through of “A Psalm of Life”.

At this point this is the order of songs in the Concert, and they have asked us to have the first 7 memorized:
1. “I Feel a Song Comin’ On”
2. “Home of My Heart”
3. “Ku-Ku”
4. “Loch Lomond”
5. “Ha Shalom”
6. “April Showers”
7. “Embraceable You”

8. “There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
9. “Abide With Me; ‘ Tis Eventide”
10. “Pie Jesu”
11. “A Psalm of Life”

Enjoy Spring Break and we’ll see you on March 31.

REMINDER: If you must miss a rehearsal because of illness, emergency, or any other reason, please call Linda Walker ahead of time. (208) 230-4344. There should be no unexcused absences.

March 10, 2009 Rehearsal

This week we spent much time going over some tricky harmonies and timing on some of our songs. We reviewed “Ku-Ku”, “Pie Jesu”, “April Showers” and “I Feel a Song Comin’ On” as well as “Loch Lomond”.

Correction: Last week regarding “Loch Lomond”… I said to drop the 'g' on sleep-ing and com-ing and gloam-ing. Linda has decided that she wants us to sing as written on sleeping and coming and to drop the 'g' only on gloam-ing. We also learned that ‘gae’ is pronounced gee (long e) and ‘take’ is pronounced tyke. Just sing the way we might hear the true Scottish sing.

On “April Showers” there is a potential problem twice near the end of the song where the altos I & II sing the word a-long . The tendency is to sing the ’ng’ too soon making a not so pretty sound. As we have 3 notes to cover in the word ‘-long’, it might be better to sing ‘la-ah-ah’ and only at the very end add the ‘ng’ , or just forget the ‘ng’ altogether. Also, as this is a barbershop harmony, we should not sing with a vibrato especially at the very end of this song.

This brings our repertoire to 11 songs, the first 7 they would like us to have memorized:
“I Feel a Song Comin’ On”
“Home of My Heart”
“Ku-Ku”
“Loch Lomond”
“Ha Shalom”
“April Showers”
“Embraceable You”
“There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
“Abide With Me; ‘ Tis Eventide”
“Pie Jesu”
“A Psalm of Life”

Have fun memorizing. And thanks to Milana for making practice CD’s available for $5.

See you next week.

March 3, 2009 Rehearsal

This week in addition to reviewing several songs, we added our last two songs to our repertoire, a beautiful arrangement by Bruce and Linda Walker of a well-known traditional Scottish song “Loch Lomond” and the stirring and magnificent “A Psalm of Life”.

FYI: Loch Lomond is a freshwater Scottish loch, lying in Central Scotland. It is the largest lake in Great Britain, and a popular leisure destination.

Bruce and Linda’s arrangement of the song finds the melody interchanging between the sopranos and altos and many times we will find 4 part harmonies. We are reminded to pronounce the words as the Scottish would by dropping the ‘g’ in words like sleep-in or com-in or gloam-in. (which by the way means twilight; dusk)

“A Psalm of Life” reminds us that what we say and do should always be to lift and love and brighten the life of another. Technically, as there are many phrases that end in ‘er’ (like light-er, bright-er, sweet-er, fleet-er, an-oth-er, oth-er, strong-er, long-er) watch that you drop the r so that the sound is not harsh.

This brings our repertoire to 11 songs, the first 7 they would like us to have memorized:
“I Feel a Song Comin’ On”
“Home of My Heart”
“Ku-Ku”
“Loch Lomond”
“Ha Shalom”
“April Showers”
“Embraceable You”
“There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
“Abide With Me; ‘ Tis Eventide”
“Pie Jesu”
“A Psalm of Life”

Have fun memorizing.

February 24, 2009 Rehearsal

At last we have a date for our Spring Concert. It is Saturday May 9 at the Caldwell High School Auditorium where we have performed in the past. When we have all the songs and their order in the performance , we will get you all the details in a single entry. So watch for this colorful Treble Clef sign . . . . that will be your notice of anything to do with the Spring Concert.

Tonight was spent in review of several of the songs listed below. We are asked to memorize “I Feel a Song Comin’ On” & “Home of My Heart” which will be a fitting way to begin the concert. Others we reviewed were “Ku-Ku”, “Embraceable You”, and “Abide With Me; ‘ Tis Eventide”.

If you haven’t done this already, Bruce asked us to pick up & read a policy sheet explaining how Una Voce is both a Performance Ensemble and a Group Voice Class. They ask us to please follow the attendance policy carefully.

This brings our repertoire to 9 songs:
“I Feel a Song Comin’ On”
“Home of My Heart”

“Ha Shalom”
“April Showers”

Bruce modified the previous arrangement of “April Showers” into a much easier to read treble arrangement. The altos thank you.

February 10, 2009 Rehearsal

So sorry we missed the entry for last week. This editor was ill and didn't attend.

We were informed tonight of the death of Ronda Mendenhall’s son yesterday. He had been ill for several years. Our hearts go out to Ronda and her family at this time. The funeral will be this Saturday Feb 14, 2009 at the Letha LDS Church at 10:00 am. (Letha is west of Emmett about 12 miles)

Tonight our rehearsal began with an SSAA a cappalla arrangement of “Embraceable You", followed by a barbershop arrangement of another oldie, “April Showers”. We also reviewed “Pie Jesu” at which time Bruce gave us a brief Latin lesson on the 5 Latin vowel sounds.
--The small i is pronounced as a long e sound.
--e or ae together as eh
--An o sound is part way between ah and o. (forming the mouth as if to say o and saying ah inside the mouth)
--And the u is oo.
-- R at the beginning of a word is always trilled in Latin.

This brings our repertoire to 7 songs

“Ha Shalom”
“Abide With Me Tis Eventide”
“There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
“Pie Jesu”
“I Feel a Song Coming On”
“Embraceable You”
“April Showers”

We are searching for a venue to have our Spring Concert on May 2, if anyone knows of one please let us know.

See you next week.

January 26, 2009 Rehearsal

Two new songs were introduced tonight, "I Feel a Song Coming On", and "Impossible Dream". Linda says we probably won't sing Impossible Dream at the concert, however.

Speaking of the concert, we still don't have a firm date for the Spring Concert. It will be in late April or early May.

Our reportoire now consists of:
“Ha Shalom”
“Abide With Me Tis Eventide”
“There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
“Pie Jesu”
“I Feel a Song Coming On”

January 20, 2009 Rehearsal

We began our rehearsal tonight with a review of "Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide" and "Ha Shalom" then Linda introduced us to “Pie Jesu” from the Rutter Requiem.

John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and is a gifted composer, choral conductor, editor, and arranger of many works we are familiar with. This past Christmas concert, we sang his original composition “ Candlelight Carol”. “

Pie Jesu” is a tender prayer pleading God to grant everlasting rest. When I Googled the words “Pie Jesu” for clearer meaning, I found the following: “Pie (the vocative of the word pius) is conventionally translated as "sweet", but normally means "dutiful," "godly," "faithful", or "kind."[2] Requiem (accusative of requies) is often translated as "peace", although that would be pacem, as in "Dona nobis pacem" (Give us peace).”

The other song she introduced was her SSA arrangement of “There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”. She arranged this while on a mission in SLC. It is arranged for women's voices, organ, & 2 flutes.

Our reportoire to this point is:
"Abide With Me, Tis Eventide"
"Ha Shalom"
"There is Sunshine in My Soul Today"
"Pie Jesu"

Bruce reminded us of the need to sign in on the back table each time we come to practice, and for anyone new to fill out & turn in a registration form. Tuition for this Spring Session is $100 which includes tuition, music, binder, etc. Make tuition checks payable to Linda Walker but give check to Bruce. Deadline for Christmas Concert CD orders is Feb 1. Again make checks payable to Linda Walker but give check to Bruce

unavocechorus.blogspot.com is the new blog for Una Voce Chorus that anyone can view. The website can be placed on your desktop for easy access. If you need help achieving this let me know.

We look forward to seeing you next week.

January 12, 2009 Rehearsal

Welcome to the official blog for UNA VOCE, Idaho’s Premier Women’s Chorus. We hope you will refer to it often to get caught up on anything you might have missed or to personally introduce someone to UNA VOCE. Each Wednesday we will be summarizing the practice we had the previous night for anyone who missed the rehearsal or needs a reminder of what took place. We will list music we rehearsed, insight into the music, etc. and any announcements or instruction Bruce has for us. Your comments will be appreciated.

UNA VOCE Women’s Chorus rehearsed for the first time last night marking the beginning of our spring session. It was so good to see so many familiar faces and a few new ones and to get to sight read some new music.

Linda’s SSAA arrangement of “Abide With Me; ‘Tis Eventide” is beautiful beyond words. She encouraged us to visualize pictures whenever we sing. To her, the first part of the song is a very peaceful twilight setting where if the Savior was traveling by her home she would desire that he would come into her home that she could receive everything that he could give her. Then in the middle section she saw herself serving dinner to Him. It was busier, maybe a little noisy with things coming and going on. The final section might be a time of reflecting on our great dependence on His love, and also on our desire to love and serve Him.

“ Ha Shalom”, a prayer for peace, is the other song we sang. It is very dramatic and so fun to sing because of the huge range of dynamics. It will be accompanied with piano and violin. As we sang we pictured ourselves leaving our homes as they did in Fiddler on the Roof, feeling the sorrow and oppression of those who are persecuted by others. Throughout the song the burden begins to lift till hearts are restored to peace by the end of the song.

Next week we will begin working on PIE JESU, from the Rutter Requiem.

Bruce addressed the availability of the Christmas Concert CD, “Pine Cones and Holly Berries”, and asked everyone who desired, to fill out an order form noting how many they wanted, and return them with their check for that amount (@ $10 each) as soon as possible. (Make checks payable to Linda Walker) Nathan needs an exact count so he can complete the order.

Tuition & music for this semester is $100 which includes music, binders, etc. You may make your check payable to Linda Walker.

Thanks again for all who have joined us to have a most uplifting, enjoyable, learning experience.
